Is it possible to modify a wig color? I'm a newb!

Post by ichibidrop on Fri May 15, 2015 7:43 am

Hello! I'm new here and I'm new to dolls in general! Smile
Anyway, I designed my first Makie after an O.C. that I love. Here are some drawings of my O.C and her digital self.

The artwork is a little different because I've used different media and styles and because of time. But anyways, I've done a lot of research while I wait patiently bounce and I think when I get her she will look too pale (I would have liked a skin tone between strawberry milk and cool caramel, but at the end didn't want to risk her being too tan so went with the paler version) and her wig will especially be a very pale blond compared to the more golden blond/brown/orange I usually portray her with.

Here's a doll on instagram similar to mine: https://instagram.com/p/18hqmXSIaJ/?taken-by=makie.scarlett.ivy

Do you guys know if it's possible to add darker highlights to the wig or dye it or something similar? I'm a COMPLETE newb to dolls and haven't found any good tips about it other than making a wig from scratch...  Neutral

Should I just buy her a new wig altogether if this one doesn't work out?
If I can't find one with the right haircut, should I get a longer one of a shade I like and then cut it myself?

I would appreciate ANY advice, tips, and links! Thank you in advance!

I've been modifying a wig over in one of my threads: http://makies.findforum.net/t192-elisabeth-is-here and on my instagram: https://instagram.com/engingerboom/. It used to be the light pale blonde pixie wig, now it's a black and red wig in a different style. I talk about the process in that thread!

I also first mentioned it in the wigs thread: http://makies.findforum.net/t67-wigs-wigs-wigs, because like you I wanted to customise a wig but couldn't find any resources. I got in touch with makielabs and found out the material of the wig so that I could dye it.

With all that information, you should be able to dye your wig just fine. Let me know if you have any more questions. Smile

P.S. If you want to change her skin colour, there are resources on this forum for that too. The skin dyeing tutorial by makielabs: http://makies.findforum.net/t34-hand-dying-makies-step-by-step-by-makielabs and information about tea staining (for more subtle colour shifts I think, could be perfect for your makie since you want it just a little bit darker!): http://makies.findforum.net/t18-dye-with-tea

I actually dyed mine with chalk and water and surprisingly it doesn't come off, however it makes the wig rather dry!

Gah! Sorry I haven't replied to thank you guys (howll and nattherat) for the tips! I read them soon after you posted them but couldn't reply on my ipod, so now I'm on the computer. Anyway, I read through all the info and it sounds like it would do the trick, but I'm too scared of messing up now that...

MY MAKIE IS HERE!!! And she's so cute and not as washed out as I thought she was going to be! The hair is not as golden as I originally wished it was, but that being said the doll is so cute I don't want to risk ruining her lol She is an awesome 3D representation of my character and I'm just so happy the way she turned out!!!!  Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy I think I'll leave her the way she is at least for now <3 <3 <3

Ichibidrop, if you ever change your mind, there are so many cute wigs out there. Golden blonde is easy to find. I'm a bit afraid to color any of my Makie lab wigs, myself.

I will definitely do some research on it  Very Happy There is a second (and a third, fourth, fifth, and sixth) Makie that I want to buy who also happens to be a blonde except with long hair, so if I can get Maddie a golden wig to make her look more like my OC and to make the dolls look that much different from each other, then it would be awesome. But seriously, this things are kind of addictive! I was just going to buy this one and that's that and now I'm considering accessories and what not D:

Oh yes, Makies are worse than chips! I've managed to order six of them since last spring and picked up two classics on eBay! And I've got another girl incoming. Your girl is lovely, by the way! Smile

Erm, 16 Makies currently......
With five more due to arrive any day. ^^

.......and I originally only planned on getting one, maybe two, at the most, just for the novelty of the concept of a 3D printed self designed doll. Very Happy

Don't worry, you can always join "Makies Anonymous".
Lol, purple_monkfish and I are two of the founding members! ^_~
