Aurella and Elisabeth at Comic Con!

Post by nattherat on Wed May 27, 2015 5:42 pm

I didn't get quite as many photos as I would have liked, and I'm still waiting on a few more, but here's some shots of Aurella and Elisabeth's recent London adventure!

Set up at the table, advertising various comiicccss.

And of course, a comic con isn't complete without messing around in the hotel:

Best of all though:

They made a makie friend! Her name is Anastasia, and she has adorable painted nails! And we owners got to talk at length about how excited we are about the new accessories from makie labs including the upcoming wheelchair. Very Happy

They did pretty well, considering how much they were handled (one person even picked up Aurella and shook her around, which was quite scary. I'm bad at telling people they were display-only). Elisabeth's wig bled a little bit onto one of Aurella's socks, and after it all Aurella needed one of her eyelashes reapplying. In all honesty though, I was expecting much more damage no matter how careful I was!

I'm not sure how well or not they sold the comic yet (exact stock counts won't be done for a couple of weeks), but they got a LOT of attention, it was really cool. Very Happy A lot of people who knew about makies stopped by too (as you can see), and we got to chat. Actually, some people also asked if they were for sale! I was really surprised and happy at how positive all the responses to them were.

Since some people wanted to buy the actual dolls, it has made me consider whether I should offer faceups, or entire custom jobs, or something like that. As someone who sells stuff I make, I am aware there's a big difference between people saying they want something, and people actually buying the thing (which is ok of course, that's normal!). People I've talked to have said maybe I should try a single makie, but I do worry that that's quite a large investment without knowing whether it would sell or not (the two dolls I own have easily cost over £100 each to finish, which is a scary thought, but worth it because I wanted them). I'm currently hovering over cheap Monster High dolls because it seems like that's a less risky place to start (in that the start-up cost of £10 for a doll is easier to absorb in case nobody wants it compared to a base £70), but I'm still undecided! I definitely want to do more doll customisation, and I'd be up for customising other people's dolls if they wanted, but there's a lot to consider financially.

In the meantime though, Aurella and Elisabeth are safely back, eyelashes reapplied and clothes straightened back out, waiting for next Comic Con! XDDD

Makies are so sturdy--I've been pretty surprised by what mine have been exposed to. I even scrubbed my dyed girl with the rough side of a kitchen sponge with NO effect! And I've scratched her back with a pin. Nothing.

Anyway, I could imagine people might pay for a custom face, especially as the original Makie makeup can wear off, but it is hard to know what people will actually buy as opposed to what they say they want. If you do try a custom service or selling custom Monster High, I hope you do well!

Didn't they do well?   I can well imagine they were a hit and great that you got to meet some other people with Makies as well.

Good luck with customising!

Very Happy Sorry for taking a while to reply, I ended up pretty busy after the con!

Thanks for the kind words all!

@jupiternames - Definitely! I'm still pretty nervous given the investment that's gone into them, but I'm really happy with the amount of rough and tumble makies can stand up to. I don't know how many cons they'll survive through (next time, I'm going to buy them dedicated doll bags. It might seem a bit overboard, but just to be safe from Elisabeth's wig and general scuffs), but I'd like to take them to as many as I can.

As for customising, I am giving it a go now! Makies are definitely a bit more of a forgiving canvas than MH I think haha, since the heads are much bigger, and already made with customisation in mind. But it's an interesting challenge all the same!

I should have made this a more general thread for my two makies, whoops! I'll just make it into one now so I'm not spamming multiple threads in the gallery. Very Happy

They got a little bit of time out in the sun today! Climbing trees, and I imagine talking about their A-Levels together. Very Happy

Some more recent stuff! I haven't really been able to spend much time with them recently, I'm swamped with 2D design/illo work, but here's a selection of pictures since last time I posted:

Aurella flies around upside down since that's a thing she can do as a vampire. Elisabeth tries to smooch her.

Some blurry pictures of them getting moved around from shelf to shelf as I tried to make space for more dolls.

Similarly accidentally quite a blurry picture. They swapped clothes! They suit each other's clothes a lot actually. Though this does also just remind me that I really wish I'd asked makie labs to swap Elisabeth's body out for a boy body. The body she has just isn't right for her at all.

I'm trying to think of a boy makie to make, just so I can swap the bodies around, whoops! (seems a better option than buying just a body kit on its own)
