Trying customising

Post by Kitty-kat on Sun Jul 12, 2015 9:29 pm

I've been wanting to try out customising and face ups more, and not wanting to be too hasty on my makies, I've decided to try on cheaper dolls (ones that I won't worry about replacing if I screw up, which I'm bound to do). I think that I will experiment by taking dolls and giving them character (literally). I've had several ideas to repaint Monster High/ Ever After High dolls, but they need certain skin types and to get them I'd need to search far and wide (which I wouldn't plan to do with just testing out).
However, the other day I found a cheap Clawdeen, and it gave me an idea. So I am now attempting to turn her into Garnet from Steven Universe (I've been catching up on a lot of it lately, and I'm completely obsessed  Laughing). She seems an easy candidate to go wrong, but it's worth a try, the only thing I think I'll find difficult is her hair, but I was thinking a sponge might work? If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to here them. Her body type might be a problem too, but I figured if I just made her clothes looser and padded them would give her more shape. Smile

Here's what I have to work with:

So far I've done a bit on her face (probably the last thing I should have done, but I'm too eager to start), and she seems to be doing OK. I've decided to leave a lot of her make up still on, not feeling confident enough to do the whole shbang (sorry for terrible photo quality):

Are you thinking about rerooting her so she has more the hair style of Garnet?

I'm not entirely sure. I could, but she has crazy neat hair, and I'd need to find a way to bush it out into an afro. My fist thought was finding something spongy and shaping it to stick it down on her head, but I'm not sure if it could work. But I guess that's the part of experimenting  Razz

you can kinda afro hair, it involves curling it into tight curls, then you can either backcomb it or just cut it to shape. I found that getting the curls tight enough was the tricky bit. Check tutorials on "afro for dolls" or something?
But a dark coloured spongy thing might make a more show accurate look.

Ok, after a bit of a slip up with removing the ears (I expected them to be the hardest  Neutral) I have decided to go with the spongy idea, as they will be able to cover her ear stubs. I sort of knew I'd end up doing it anyway, but I couldn't stand to loose the lovely, soft monster high hair  Crying or Very sad, but I can live with it

You could always keep the hair, if you cut it close to the scalp you can wrap an elastic band around it and save it for another reroot. That's what I tend to do if the hair is really nice or an interesting colour or something.

Ok, so I've got her look down now, I ended up using a hair donut for the hair, sewn up at the back, but I'm really struggling with a pattern (and I doubt a leotard will be easy) so the rest will take me a while, but here she is so far!  Very Happy

Oh! A hair donut! I had one of those... Wonder where that went? Anyway, great idea, it looks a lot like the picture!
