Devon, the bubblegum prince

Post by Lace on Sat Jul 25, 2015 3:38 pm

Finally I can introduce you all to my very first makie!
The pictures are the result of both poor lighting and no photography skills on my part but still, hopefully you can see him well enough.

Here he is! I have his hair tied back because when it's loose it tries to take over.
I'm actually a little disappointed with his wig, the hair is quite thin where it parts and you can very clearly see the wig cap. I do love the colour though.

I'll need to work on his wardrobe, he definitely needs another top to wear under that yellow shirt.
I'm also tempted to try giving him some stubble if I can find a tutorial for that somewhere. I guess he'd need to have black stubble rather than pink though, hmm.

Oh, and don't worry, I won't try and use coloured backgrounds for any future pics Embarassed

aww he's so pretty/handsome... pransome?
lol.
I'm thinking he needs something floaty and frilly as the undershirt and I know what you mean about the hair. I use a loom band bracelet as a headband for my long haired boy, it keeps it all back out of his face.

Pransome works, I quite like that.
I'll be on the look out for more clothes, we'll see how many I can buy only to realise his chest and shoulders and too broad for them until I cave and borrow a sewing machine. Laughing

I'm thinking I might cut his hair a bit so it's around mid way down his back? And then I can use the rest to craft a fabulous pink beard.

Thank you! I'm going to be hunting around for more skirts, I have that one and a pink one that's actually floor length on him and doesn't do up because his waist is too wide, though it works if I roll up the top a bit and fix it with a paperclip (pink to match said skirt of course).

Devon looks great! I'm loving the shoes too. I hope you figure out something for the stubble. I know Sioux has done some stubbly faces, but I'm not sure what her technique is.

Devon looks great! The pink hair looks so fresh on him, it makes me want another cocoa bean Makie with bright hair (my cocoa girl has black hair).

There definitely needs to be an entire rainbow of cocoa bean makies. I'm having to stop myself from designing him a friend with bright blue curly hair.

Ok so this is a bit pathetic but my first project is complete!

One lilac and cream flower crown.

I swear he's smiling more there than usual, I guess he approves!

He looks amazing (I love his name too, it reminds me of Prince Gumball in Adventure Time)

His hair really pops from his dark skin, a thing i like with dolls. My opinion on stubble is just tiny little dots with a watercolor pencil. I don't really know, but that's what i do when drawing, just tiny dots.  Smile

stubble, right... Sioux did stubble for my doll John (before he was John lol) and it looks like it's dots and such. Let me find a picture. She probably can explain best how she did it though, heh.

https://flic.kr/p/vf1eQh There he is btw.

It's like dashed lines and careful shading.

I also know someone else did flock facial hair but that's a little thicker than just stubble.

Thanks folks!

Wow Sioux's stubble work is stunning, looks like having a darker shade and a lighter shade works well..  I won't be able to manage anything close to that but it's certainly helpful, thank you.
Flocking would definitely be too thick for the look I want, shame though because I love how it looks and feels.

And thank you DollYay, I'll be on the lookout for some watercolour pencils!

Having thought about it some I think I am going to try and give him pink stubble..  I don't know how successful that'll be, whether it'll show at all against his skin tone, but I'd like to try none the less.
I have a question about sealant though if that's ok, is it necessary/are there alternatives? I'm a little wary of using anything toxic and proper masks are kind of expensive.

I haven't sealed either of my Makie's faceups, purely because I'm not sure if I will want to completely change them in the future! But i just used watercolor pencils, if i were to use paint i probably would seal it only because of smudging, but even then i would most likely stick to my good old friend, Matte Mod Podge.  Razz

I have sealed mine with msc (which honestly is no better than humbrol hobby seal or any other model sealant, just a lot more toxic argh) but i've found it doesn't do much. the face still comes off if you touch it too much. It just takes slightly more time. I haven't sealed a fair few of my other dolls though and the paint stays on. If you're going to be handling the doll a lot or taking them out, seal is helpful to reduce wear and tear but if they're just sitting on a shelf? not so much. It's also useful if you're doing lots of layers like with pastal and want to be able to wipe one layer and not start totally from scratch but i've always been too impatient to seal between layers hahah.
